Grid Operations

The NYISO is responsible for the New York Control Area (NYCA) which is part of the Eastern Interconnection, a vast area of interconnected power systems that cover most of the eastern US and Canada. All power systems in the Eastern Interconnection must be operated at a frequency of 60hz. This is accomplished by constantly maintaining a balance between generation and load. Grid operations also involves “securing” the system – managing power flows so as not to damage equipment – and ensuring the voltage on each line is maintained within appropriate limits.
