The  2012-2016 Strategic Plan builds on the success of the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) in reliably operating New York’s bulk electricity grid, effectively administering the state’s wholesale electricity markets, comprehensively planning for the future, and advancing the progress of technology serving the electricity needs of the Empire State.

Message from the President & Chief Executive Officer

The NYISO’s five-year Strategic Plan, in combination with its annual Business Plan, provides the framework for successfully operating the state’s bulk electricity grid, administering New York’s competitive wholesale electricity markets, conducting comprehensive planning for the state’s electric power system, and advancing the technological infrastructure of the electric system serving the Empire State.

The NYISO’s mission, in collaboration with its stakeholders, is to serve the public interest and provide benefit to consumers by:
  • Maintaining and enhancing regional reliability,
  • Operating open, fair and competitive wholesale electricity markets,
  • Planning the power system for the future, and
  • Providing factual information to policy makers, stakeholders and investors in the power system.

The NYISO is committed to being a leader in reliability, market design, and technological innovation. We aim to serve as an authoritative source of information on the electric system, sustain and enhance our robust planning processes and practice excellence in execution throughout our organization.

Our vision is to strengthen collaboration among regional grid operations and enhance cooperation among regional planning authorities. Moreover, we are focused on the efficient integration of emerging technologies, including renewable resources, energy storage, and smart grid.

As we strive to fulfill that mission, address expanding responsibilities, and meet future challenges, we will continue to work with market participants, regulators, and policy makers, to improve the way we conduct business and enhance the ways the NYISO assists to address the economic, environmental and energy needs of New York State.
