Senior Writer - Communications

Description: The primary responsibility of the Senior Writer is to communicate the key messages of the NYISO to external audiences, stakeholders and employees. The Senior Writer supports the communications needs of the NYISO by writing and editing materials accurately, clearly, concisely, and consistently.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Write for NYISO print, electronic and verbal communications vehicles including internet, intranet, news releases, newsletters, presentations, and publications
  • Provide editorial support of NYISO communications
  • Assist in the development of communications processes to ensure that communications are delivered to the target audiences in the most effective manner
  • Provide writing and editorial support to departments throughout the NYISO as needed


  • Experience/Skills:
  • Minimum of 7 years of demonstrated writing success in journalism, corporate communications, public affairs or other professional writing capacity
  • Knowledge of the electricity industry and/or energy policy is preferred
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Ability to simplify complex and technical material into language appropriate for the intended audience

    Sr. Operational Auditor - Executive

    Description: The Sr. Operational Auditor will be primarily responsible for performance compliance testing, developing audit plans, assessing risks, and performing both operational and compliance audits.

    Experience/Skills/Special Requirements:
  • 5+ years Audit experience; experience in an electrical utility, power system or engineering industry desirable

    Strategic and Business Planning Analyst - Strategic and Business Planning

    Description: The Strategic and Business Planning Specialist will be primarily responsible for identifying and analyzing emerging trends, market structural strengths and weaknesses and strategic behavior as they may influence market direction.

    Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Gather and analyze information to better understand future market trends and strengthen market knowledge
  • Create research reports and white papers for a variety of internal and external audiences
  • Manage projects and project teams related to the department’s core activities using internal and external resources
  • Gather appropriate commercial and technical information from public sources such as business and technical publications, conferences, advertising, and internet sites to better understand future market trends
  • Perform a variety of market analysis work which includes studying potential new market developments as well as analysis of natural gas infrastructure as it impacts the New York electric market place; conduct these analyses considering a variety of perspectives and factors including legal, economic, operations, infrastructure, etc.
  • Manage studies that will allow the NYISO to become and remain the authoritative source of information on key issues; expand capabilities to be viewed as the independent, unbiased source of information on the operation of the bulk power system and wholesale markets in New York
  • Establish and lead a monitoring capability to identify developments in our external environment (environment, retail, fuel markets, other ISOs, etc.)

    Description: The Business Analyst, Infrastructure Products is responsible for analyzing, developing, documenting and translating business requirements into IT solutions to solve business issues. Business Analysts provides technical assistance to the Product Manager in the development of business cases to support product enhancements and longer term product planning efforts.

    Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Create discovery documents, white papers, concept of operation documents, business requirements documents, use cases and presentation materials
  • Meet with business owners, project sponsors and Market Participants to obtain information regarding the objectives of the customers as they relate to projects and the resolution of issues that can result in IT development tasks
  • Work closely with Product Management and Project Management supporting the development of the product vision and project execution

    Market Monitoring Analyst (Assoc, Analyst, Sr. Analyst) - Market Monitoring – Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting

    Description: The primary responsibility of the Market Monitoring Analyst is to perform analysis and provide technical expertise on market performance in New York State energy markets through studies and periodic reporting. Market Monitoring Analysts represent the department and participate in market specialization teams including commenting on functional design specifications and market design changes.

    Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Analyze NYISO markets to identify potential market design flaws; focus on market outcomes as they relate to various system conditions, market participant behavior, grid configuration and operations.
  • Produce short-term and long-term market studies in areas such as energy, ancillary service, virtual bidding, external transactions, load, transmission and Transmission Congestion Contract (TCC) for review by department and senior NYISO management, members of the NYISO Board of Directors, market participants and regulators
  • Analyze data using simulation, analysis tools, and statistical analysis to study changes in market design, trends, competitive structure, market power and other topics as assigned
  • Participate in the production of special reports including weekly, monthly, capability period and annual reports for senior NYISO management, members of NYISO’s Board of Directors, market participants and regulators
  • Act as principal contact, on a regular basis, with regulatory agencies (FERC, PSC) on matters of market performance and outcomes
  • Initiate contact with market participants on a regular basis on market participant behaviors and market outcomes; review, analyze and provide early notification of market issues to Market Monitoring management
  • Assist in the timely response to customer inquiries as assigned
  • Produce written reports explaining issues and findings; communicate results of analysis/studies to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Develop expertise in one or more areas of the NYISO markets and participate in activities of at least one market specialization team

This includes launching new methodologies according to business needs.

    Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Lead 1-4 projects per year using DMAIC, DFSS / DMADV and Kaizen / Lean principles

    Software Developer - Market Operations Products

    Description: NYISO software developers perform all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, testing, deployment and post-production support.

    Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Create software design specifications for functionality as defined in approved requirement specifications
  • Support project management processes in all phases of project lifecycle to provide advice on feasibility, status, work breakdown, and estimates
  • Participate in the requirement specification process for new software functionality to ensure that definitions of new functionality are clearly defined and understood
  • Communicate with customer groups and business analysts with respect to software capabilities, functionality and design options
  • Ensure designs are consistent with NYISO development standards and industry guidelines

    Manager, Facilities and Safety - Facilities and Safety

    Description: The Manager, Facilities and Safety responsible for all aspects of facility management including internal and external building systems, grounds, housekeeping, maintenance, utilities, environment, health and safety. This work requires applying business acumen, assuming risk, making decisions, acting as organizational change agent and building consensus across the organization.

    Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Direct and implement the long-term comprehensive design, planning, construction, operation, maintenance and alteration of equipment, machinery, buildings and other facilities
  • Overall responsibility for operation and maintenance of computer rooms, data centers, control centers, office environments, buildings, roads and grounds (including building infrastructure services such as electrical distribution, environmental, HVAC, UPS, diesel generators, fire detection and protection systems)
  • Ensure a safe workplace and compliance with applicable regulations including OSHA, National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Association, etc.

    Manager - Enterprise Architecture
    Description:
    The primary responsibility of the Manager, Enterprise Architecture is to formulate and manage enterprise IT architecture and technology strategies in concert with the CIO, CEO and senior executives to meet short-, mid- and long-term corporate goals and objectives. The Manager, EA will manage a small team of Architects who collectively provide technical advice and engineering assistance to production teams on an ad-hoc basis. In addition to supporting existing projects, the EA department identifies and assesses emerging technologies and determines applicability to NYISO's environment.

    Specific responsibilities include:
  • Build consensus around proposed plans among key stakeholders applying business acumen and political savvy
  • Based on forecasts of business demands, anticipate problems and synthesize appropriate IT solutions, providing leadership and support to effectively implement solutions
  • Direct the identification and evaluation of new and emerging technologies and recommends strategic technical architectural initiatives best suited to organizational functions and goals
  • Regularly communicate with NYISO C-level executives, members of Board of Directors and market participants regarding IT strategy and architecture
  • Use business knowledge and technical expertise to provide technical advice and engineering assistance to NYISO management and staff

  • Provide motivation and supervision to staff in the completion of complex assignments that support needs of NYISO’s technical architecture


  • Experience/Skills:
  • 10+ years progressively responsible experience including significant project and staff supervision responsibilities in areas such as IT portfolio management, IT governance and IT service management
  • Expertise in IT architecture and strategic planning to support a complex, web based business environment
  • Ability to apply business acumen, assume risk, make decisions, act as organizational change agent and build consensus across the organization
  • Proficiency/experience required with COBiT, ITIL, object-oriented modeling tools such as Rational Rose, System Architect, and business process modeling tool such as Casewise or Popkin


  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Computer Science, Engineering; MS or MBA preferred; Professional certification such as CISA, CISSP, CDP desirable.

    Location: Schenectady, NY

    Power System Operator/Associate Operator - Operations
    Description: A Power System Operator is a member of a unique team responsible for the operation of the state’s bulk electric power system. This responsibility includes the reliable operation of the bulk power transmission system encompassing all of New York State.

    Power System Operator’s are also responsible for the dispatch of all generation resources in the real time and hour ahead time frames for the energy markets. Constant communication with numerous customers involved in the New York electric energy market and neighboring ISO’s including Canada is a major responsibility.

    NYISO’s 24/7/365 operations require working 12 hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends

    Specific responsibilities include:
  • Coordinating and implementing actions to balance and maintain reliable operation of the bulk power system and the energy market
  • Monitoring and analyzing information
  • Maintaining daily logs with complete documentation
  • Preparing reports as required

    Engineer - TCC Market Operations
    Description: The Engineer, TCC Market Operations is primarily responsible for studies and analysis to support NYISO Transmission Congestion Contract (TCC) auctions and other TCC market activities. Please note this position may be filled at the Assoc Engineer, Engineer, or Sr. Engineer level, depending on candidate qualifications such as experience and technical skills.

    Specific responsibilities include:
  • Translate network model from Day-Ahead Market format to TCC auction platform
  • Conduct optimal Power Flow analyses and apply other software tools and procedures to implement TCC auctions
  • Validate market participant bids and offers submitted into NYISO conducted auctions
  • Verify market participant bids and offers are accurately reflected in the auction models
  • Verify awards produced from the auction models are completely and accurately provided to market participants
  • Post results of auctions to the NYISO website; allocate TCC auction revenues
  • Calculate congestion shortfalls/surpluses
  • Continually evaluate TCC processes and recommend improvements


  • Experience/Skills:
  • 3+ years of power systems, power generation, or electric utility experience (Assoc Engineer requires no work experience; Sr. Engineer requires 7+ years relevant experience, MS degree in Electrical Engineering helpful)
  • Experience with ISO/RTO wholesale electricity markets helpful
  • Knowledge of TCC and FTR (financial transmission rights) tools and power flow software such as PSS/e Optimal Power Flow or Nexant Hedge helpful
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations; ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and a working knowledge of SAS or other statistical programming languages preferred


  • Education: BS degree in Engineering required, Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems preferred.

    Sr. Planning Engineer - Resource Planning
    Description:
    The primary responsibility of the Sr. Planning Engineer is to support NYISO’s mission to maintain reliability on New York’s bulk power system. The Sr. Planning Engineer will monitor and assess the viability of new energy infrastructure projects that are identified in the NYISO Comprehensive Reliability Planning Process (CRPP).

    Specific responsibilities include:
  • Monitor and assess the continued viability of Reliability Needs solutions across New York State per the CRPP Manual
  • Perform on-site inspections and meet with Market Participants to verify progress of each Reliability Needs solution
  • Coordinate with Transmission Owners (TO) for verification of progress and continued viability of each Base Case TO Update and Regulated Backstop Solution (RBS)
  • Coordinate with Generator Owners for projection and certification of generation unit retirement plans
  • Prepare and present reports for all CRPP Reliability Needs solutions as required by the NYISO Board, the NYS Public Service Commision and other regulatory agencies
  • Coordinate with the NYS Public Service Commision to facilitate selection and management of the proposed RBSs
  • Monitor network modeling changes from Generator Owners and Transmission Owners for compliance with the NYISO planning notification requirements
  • Perform site inspections and observe performance testing of Attachment Facilities during project Test and Commissioning phases of interconnection projects. This includes the review of monthly status report submittals required during Interconnection construction and installation activities


  • Experience/Skills:
  • 7+ years of total experience in the engineering and construction of electric transmission and/or generation projects
  • 3 years of experience as a Project Manager overseeing projects from inception through commissioning including direct experience with Generation and Transmission Line construction and site management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of key construction activities such as site control, permitting, environmental studies, public siting, and contractual arrangements for resources, engineering, procurement, and construction
  • Excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to prepare and present reports
  • Position requires 25% travel within New York State


  • Education: Bachelors degree in Engineering or Construction Management required; Masters degree preferred. Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation desirable. Project Management Institute (PMI) certification desirable.
