Life in the Capital Region

The New York Independent Syst Operator (NYISO) is located just outside Albany - the Capital of New York State. Located along the scenic Hudson River and surrounded by the Adirondack and Catskill mountains, the Capital Region is home to more than 15 private and state colleges. In addition, the Capital Region has an array of sports teams, critically acclaimed arts & entertainment venues, as well as the renowned Saratoga Race Course.

Area Overview

The greater Capital District area, consisting of the Albany-Schenectady-Amsterdam, NY area has a population (as of 2006) of 1,147,850, making it the third largest metropolitan area in New York State , and aside from New York City CSA, the only area that has shown any population growth.

Forbes ranked Albany-Schenectady-Troy as the third best place in the country with the best education and named Albany a Top IQ Campus as part of its 150 Places to Live Rich. (2005)

 

Small Times magazine ranked University at Albany 's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering as the best in the country for micro and nanotechnology . The school was tops in education, facilities and industry outreach. (2006)
