VIDEO: People Who Power New York: "Bringing Out the Best in His Crew"
Brandon Cheely loves figuring how to optimize performance – whether it’s the software that runs electricity markets or the team he manages at the NYISO.
Brandon is the Senior Manager of the Reliability & Markets team, which is part of the Information Technology department at the NYISO. His group designs some of the mission-critical software that makes NYISO-administered competitive electricity auctions run smoothly.
More specifically, his team is deeply involved in supporting the bidding and settlement functions of capacity market auctions and demand-response programs. That might sound technical, but Brandon explains the end goal simply. “Ultimately what we do helps to make sure that New York’s grid is reliable, and when people turn on their lights, the power is always there.”
Delivering the grid of the future requires a forward-thinking mentality. “We need to be out at the front of the curve,” he says. It is the people part of the job that Brandon appreciates most. “Being in a managerial role, it's really great to be able to help really smart people do what they do best.”
Outside of the NYISO, Brandon applied his leadership approach while serving as board president of his son’s high school crew team. “While I knew nothing about crew, I knew how to manage people,” he said, adding that seeing the young athletes realize their potential was very gratifying – and the same feeling he gets managing his team at the NYISO.
“If I do my job right and I see that people are able to be very efficient in the things that they're doing, that gives me a lot of satisfaction that I've had an impact,” he said.
