PRESS RELEASE | NYISO Prepared for Statewide Heatwave
Rensselaer, NY – The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) is prepared to meet anticipated electricity demand during the forecasted heatwave.
“Based on current conditions, the NYISO forecasts that there will be an adequate supply of electricity to meet demand through the coming period of hot weather,” said Aaron Markham, Vice President of Operations for the New York Independent System Operator.
As of Tuesday, June 18, the forecasted baseline peak demand over the next several days is as follows:
- Tuesday: 27,900 megawatts
- Wednesday: 28,050 megawatts
- Thursday: 28,900 megawatts
- Friday: 28,200 megawatts
NYISO operators are working closely with power producers, utility companies, and other grid operators in advance of the heatwave to assess the status of generating and transmission capacity. From the NYISO’s Summer Assessment 40,733 megawatts (MW) of power resources are available to serve load across the state. If necessary, NYISO operators can dispatch up to 3,275 MW through emergency operating procedures to maintain reliability during this week’s heatwave.
NYISO operates the bulk electric system under the nation’s strictest reliability standards. System reliability requirements are established, maintained, and enforced by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, North American Electric Reliability Corporation, the Northeast Power Coordinating Council, and the New York State Reliability Council.
