New York is experiencing a prolonged severe cold weather event. In many parts of the NYISO Balancing Authority Area, temperatures for January 28, 2026 through at least February 1, 2026, are forecasted to remain well below average. This prolonged severe cold weather event is expected to result in a continued sustained high level of demand for electricity. While the vast majority of generating units in the NYISO region continue to function adequately at the time of this posting, given the forecasted long-duration extreme cold weather event, NYISO foresees the need to maximize the availability of all the generating resources in New York, i.e., all generating resources that are part of the generation resource mix.
To preserve reliable operation of the electric grid through this severe cold weather event, the NYISO requested a Section 202(c) emergency order from the U.S. Department of Energy (“DOE”) to allow specified generating units to operate up to their maximum generation output level. The DOE granted the relief requested, authorizing additional dispatch of the generating unit(s) identified in Exhibit A, available at NYISO Application Exhibit A - Order No. 202-26-08, and Federal Power Act Section 202(c): NYISO Order No. 202-26-08 | Department of Energy, under certain conditions. Any market participant that finds it necessary to utilize the relief granted in the DOE Order must provide advanced notice to the NYISO by contacting ampnotify@nyiso.com.
